WARSAW — A Kentucky resident’s attempt to defraud a Warsaw bank has landed him in jail.
Jay D. Castleberry, 46, 124 Alamo Drive, Georgetown, Ky., was arrested Monday, July 18, for fraud on a financial institution. A court affidavit list his address as 1623 NC Highway 87N, Sanford, N.C.
According to an affidavit of probable cause, officers with the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department received a call June 20 from an area bank that a client had sent them a copy of a check for $2,315, written to an area business.
The check had been altered to look as if it had been written out to Castleberry. The check had been cashed April 18 at a branch of the same bank.
Tellers told police Castleberry had presented a North Carolina driver’s license when he cashed the check. Bank employees also provided surveillance footage and photos showing Castleberry cashing the check. Officers compared Castleberry’s driver’s license photo with surveillance images and verified it was the same person.
The bank also contacted the business the check had originally been intended for. Personnel at the business told the bank their mailbox had been broken into and their mail had been stolen. The bank credited the client the $2,315 Castleberry had stolen.
Castleberry was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail on a $10,000 surety and $250 cash bond.
